Hollywood, CA September 5, 2008—Academy Award winner, Bobby Moresco and Pulitzer
Prize winner Nilo Cruz have been tapped to co-pen Castro’s Daughter, the story of
Fidel Castro’s exiled daughter, Alina Fernandez. Fernandez’s international escape
made worldwide headlines in 1993 when she fled from Cuba to Spain disguised as a
Spanish tourist—she later moved to Miami, where she now hosts her radio talk show:
Simplemente Alina. Fernandez is internationally renowned, and her memoir has been
published around the world in virtually every foreign territory.
The announcement comes three months after Moresco, whose works include Crash and
Million Dollar Baby, was announced to develop the film. Moresco has also been donned
to direct and produce the film.
Cruz, the first Latino to win the Pulitzer Prize for drama, originally hails from
Cuba, and during a freedom flight in 1970 left for the Little Havana area of
Miami. Cruz began studying the arts in the early 80’s, and received his MFA from
Brown in 1994. Renowned for his award winning play; Anna in the Tropics won some
of the highest awards on the Broadway circuit, including the Pulitzer Prize as
well as that year’s Steinberg award. The following year, his project landed a
Broadway premiere with Jimmy Smits (Star Wars II and III, Cane) playing the lead
role.
The film, budgeted at twenty million dollars, is expected to go into production next
year. John Martinez and Noel Tristan of Austin-based Artists Relations Group (ARG)
originally acquired the rights to Fernandez’s story, and are producing with Moresco
Productions, in association with Joe Lamy of The Lamy Group.
